Abstract Artist
Isabelle Beaubien (b. 1980) is a remarkable abstract artist hailing from Drummondville, Quebec, Canada. Her artistic journey has been a profound exploration of self-discovery, resilience, and unbridled creativity. Inspired by the Abstract Expressionists, her work is a testament to her emotional depth and the transformative power of art in her life.
"I do not use brushes, instead I create my own tools, taking chances spreading the paint in very energetic strokes. My work is an adventure as I will always be surprised, not knowing what the end-result will be. I am constantly pushing the limits of the colors, textures, and forms to their extreme potential.”
- Isabelle Beaubien
"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
- Elenaor Rooselvelt”
Beaubien’s art is a fusion of mixed media, marked by a vibrant spectrum of colors that evoke power and originality. Her paintings are a study of contrasts, as she deftly employs acrylic and resin overlay to create depth and perspective with every piece. Her technique involves creating her own tools instead of using brushes, allowing her to work with energetic strokes and embrace the unpredictability of her creative process. Her art is an attestation of pushing the boundaries of color, texture, and form, resulting in mesmerizing and evocative works that represent vibrant moments in time and space.
Isabelle's artistic odyssey began in Montreal, Canada, where she pursued her Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, with a major in Painting and Drawing and a minor in Psychology from Concordia University in 2004. This period marked the genesis of her artistic exploration.
Eager to deepen her understanding of contemporary art, Isabelle moved to France where she would earn her Master’s degree in Contemporary Art from The Villa Arson in Nice. Living in Europe, she got to surround herself with modern art and the work of the Masters’. Ever evolving, as she grappled with the challenges of the art world and honed her artistic skills. The pressure to conform to the contemporary standards in art school became a crucible, and her tenacity shone through as she battled to prove her worth as an artist.
It is amid these experiences that she discovered her emotional, spiritual, and physical fortitude in the unlikeliest of places – the world of boxing. The grit, determination, and discipline required to excel in this demanding sport provided her with the tools she needed to face her inner demons and external challenges. Boxing became more than a pastime; it was a means of survival in a world that sometimes felt overwhelming.
"Everyday start your work, like you were painting for the first time."
- Serge Poliakoff
"Don’t always play it safe and follow the path, go where there is no path and make your own. The real battle in life is between hanging on and letting go."
- Isabelle Beaubien
Beaubien made her way to London, after completing her education in France. Isabelle's journey in the art world has not been without its struggles. Like many aspiring artists, she endured the trials of art school, facing academic pressures and critiques that often weighed heavily on her. For the following 7 years, she put down the brush and picked up a career in hospitality, managing the logistics and operations for multiple restaurants. This success built her confidence and without the pressure of the art school, she found her way back to painting. She then quit her job and rented a studio. She began exhibiting her dynamic and energetic abstract paintings. Her work garnered attention and commissions from across the UK.
"Painting is a way of being. Painting is a way to discover yourself. Every good painter, paints who he is."
